Bernie Jessome
Fan Club Monthly Letter
From the President
January 2008 Welcome back & Happy New Year to all. We trust this New Year will bring you unexpected pleasures, love, health & happiness. Due to your continuing interest and support 2008 takes us to our third year for Bernie’s fan club, and for that we would like to extend to you our appreciation. To further our appreciation, we would also like to say the same to Bernie’s fans and dinner guest who attend his dinner shows, which in turn have made it the success it is. Bernie’s and Phil’s endeavour has certainly demonstrated that this too, will continue into 2008. With the best entertainment that Bernie provides and with the wonderful food, atmosphere and servers that Phil presents at the Hilltop, how could it not carry on?Bernie has had another year full of travelling and has been far and wide; Montana, British Columbia, Whitby, Ottawa, Conestogo, Courtice, Merrickville, Ajax and the Bahamas. Our last dinner shows for 2007 were September 15th & 16th at the Hilltop Banquet Hall with Elton John / Billy Joel and their back to back legend show. Which was, once again, a sold out show and needed an extra table for twelve additional guests… a great success? Elton and Billy’s background accompaniment was fabulous, from the beginning to the end of the show there were lots of toe tapping, table slapping, clapping and singing along. It was very obvious everyone loved the music and quality of entertainment. The dancing was continuous, all though crowed, the entire night. During the show there was one candle, several lighters and some flashlights waving to the music, and la, la, la, la, la participation. I was not able to attend this performance, but my cousin Elenor did and made notes for me. Thanks Elenor. If you will recall in our last letter for 2007, Bernie had sung at a karaoke night at the resort they were vacationing at in the Bahamas, and received a great response. As you have heard me say previously, “Our Bernie never misses a beat or step”… Case in point – Legends, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and also the Everlys are now making an appearance at the Royal Sandals Bahamian Resort. After their performances, of two nights, they are vacationing with their wives for the rest of the week. Bernie and “Roy” were in Wisconsin on the 30th & 31st of November at the De Jope Casino in Madison for two nights. Moving on, with dates, Bernie will be in Fort Myers, mid April, for a five week vacation. He mentioned to me that he had an opportunity to sing but wasn’t sure if he would. In our local paper on Dec 21st in the TOTAL Entertainment Section is a write-up about Roy Orbison and Elvis, which is title, ‘The art of being a tribute artist” I quote –“I’ve always been a big fan of Roy Orbison”, said Jessome, who is acclaimed as one of the best Orbison tribute artist by none other than Sam Orbison, Roy’s brother. Jessome has been in bands “as long as he can remember” and often had covered Orbison’s standards. On a visit to Las Vegas, he saw some tribute shows and decided to tackle Orbison. His act really took off when Sam Orbison heard him. Together they toured with the Roy Orbison Story throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia.Jessome also appears at and arranges regular tribute dinner shows at the Hilltop Banquet Hall in Courtice. Paul’s now you know more of the story… Val and I had a lot of great gigs with Bernie in the early days. We also had some weird gigs. Such as the first gig I ever did for Bernie and the Band. They took their own gear in, as I did not yet have my own van, so I borrowed one for that night. The Band was all set up and had played their first set before I arrived. Bernie told me it was a place for youth offenders. When I arrived they searched the van and me. Bernie thought I was not going to show up because I was so late. When I was told some of the crimes that were committed by these youths by the Guards I sat the rest of the night with my back to the wall. If you needed the washroom you called the Guards and they would go with you. I asked the Band to help me pack the gear and wait until the guards made their second search before they left. I was better prepared for the next gig in the prison we played a few weeks later. Bernie opened and closed the show with “The Man in Black” – Johnny Cash – to a great response. I don’t think I need to tell you the names of the rest of the songs Bernie sang. I told Bernie not to sing Danny Boy as we did not want the walls to fall in as we already had a captive audience and were almost being part of them. Bernie would often work to help charities and thank God the two I just mentioned were the last.
