| Imagine the
strong soulful gospel tinged voice of Oleta Adams, the emotive jazz
inspired tone of Anita Baker, blend in the dynamic live performance style
of Tina Turner, rapped in a unique R&B coat delivered by a refreshing
songstress, and what do you get? The answer is Quisha Wint.
Wint, a gifted 22 year
old Toronto born vocalist/arranger/songwriter/ musician is gearing up for
her global introduction through her debut album simply titled, Quisha.
Translated, it’s meaning of ‘most beloved’ signifies the importance
of music in Wint’s life.
Ask Wint who her
influences are, and why, meets with the following response, “. .
.vocally it would have to be Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and Ella
Fitzgerald for her scatting. I love Kelly Price’s strong gospel tone and
I listen to Mariah Carey’s earlier work for songwriting skills. I so
respect Deborah Cox’s accomplishments as a fellow Canadian. As far as
musicians go, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and George Benson, and I
can’t forget Tina Turner. Her stage energy and perseverance in spite of
obstacles is inspiring to me.”
A graduate of Humber College Vocal Music Program, Wint began enchanting
audiences from her first performance at age eleven. An impromptu vocal
display for her church congregation lead to Wint’s invitation to perform
for the Governor of Jamaica in 1992, thus setting the stage for this
gifted artist’s path. From there, Wint set upon rounding out her talent.
An accomplished flutist, and self taught confident keyboardist, Wint is
not satisfied to stop there. Currently learning the drums, her next
instrument conquest is the bass guitar. “I want to slam on the bass like
Patrice Rushen. There’s something so appealing about a female bass
player. There’s far too few of them.”
Wint’s emergence on the Toronto music scene quickly led to her demand as
both session and back up vocalist for many notable Canadian recording
artists such as Juno Award winning R&B artist Carlos Morgan,
Canada’s platinum selling Hip Hop artist Maestro, Attic Music’s
urban/pop gal Jazmin, Orin Issacs, and Jane Siberry to name a few. Her
performance on “Love Is” written and produced by Eric Mercury, Musical
Director for the German musical production Just One World met with
enthusiastic reviews. With two consecutive terms as vocal champion for
eastern Canada it’s evident that Wint is rapidly gaining recognition at
home as well as abroad. Preferring to be known as an R&B/Soul artist,
Wint is equally as respected for her jazz styling. Quite the package for
so young an entertainer.
Well rounded, polished, a dynamic performer, and the kind of vocalist
whose unique texture and emotional delivery raises goose bumps, leaves
little question this gal is headed for the top of the charts. Wint
certainly has left a memorable mark on her audiences from Canada to Asia
thus far. Quisha will leave no doubt that this artist is one unique gem.
The buzz certainly is building, and with it is the certainty that Quisha
quickly will become “most beloved” by many the world over.
Simply the best! |
